Sculptra® is a unique aesthetic injectable known as a Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator. It is fundamentally different from traditional Dermal Fillers, it does not provide instant volume.

The main active ingredient, PLLA, is a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that has been used in dissolvable medical sutures for decades. When injected into the deeper layers of the skin, the PLLA microparticles act as a catalyst. They stimulate your cells to naturally regenerate lost collagen, restoring the skin's underlying support structure.

How does Sculptra work?
The magic of Sculptra is its gradual mechanism:
1. Injection: The Sculptra solution is injected into the deeper dermis, where the PLLA microparticles are deposited.
2. Immediate Effect: A slight volume change may be seen initially, primarily due to the water content in the solution, which is quickly absorbed by the body.
3. Collagen Stimulation: Over the next 4–6 weeks, the PLLA microparticles begin to stimulate your body's own cells (fibroblasts) to produce new, fresh collagen.

Who is NOT suitable for Sculptra?
While Sculptra is a safe and effective treatment for most people, it may not be suitable for everyone. We will always discuss your full medical history during your consultation, but you should not have Sculptra if you:

Want Immediate Results: Sculptra is a collagen stimulator, meaning results are gradual and appear over several months after a course of treatment. It is not designed for instant volume correction like traditional Dermal Fillers.

Have a History of Keloid or Hypertrophic Scarring: Due to the risk of stimulating excessive tissue growth, Sculptra is generally not suitable for those with a known tendency toward forming raised, large, or severe scars.

Have Certain Active Skin Conditions: Any active infection, inflammation, acne flare-up, or rash in the planned treatment area must be fully resolved before treatment.

Have Autoimmune Conditions: Certain conditions may affect your body's ability to heal or respond to the treatment as intended. This will be fully reviewed during your medical consultation.

When will I notice results from my Sculptra treatment?
Sculptra requires patience, but the long-term, natural-looking results are worth the wait. Because it works by stimulating your own body's collagen, the process is gradual:

Initial Phase: No visible change is expected immediately after the initial swelling subsides. You may notice a temporary subtle fullness immediately after injection, but this is solely due to the injection fluid and minor swelling, which will subside within a few days.
No visible permanent change is expected at this stage.

First Results: Subtle improvements in texture and volume usually begin to appear around 6-8 weeks after the first session.

Optimal Results: The full transformation is achieved 3–6 months after the final session in your course, as your collagen stores are fully replenished.
How many sessions of Sculptra do I need?
A consultation is required to determine the exact number of vials needed. On average we tend to recommend 1 vial per decade of age staged over the course of 3 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal correction.
We recommend a top-up maintenance session every 12–18 months to maintain your excellent results.
Discomfort is minimal. A topical numbing cream is applied to the area prior to treatment.
Sculptra is then reconstituted with a local anaesthetic (Lidocaine) to numb the area during the injection, ensuring the procedure is very comfortable.
Immediately after treatment, it is common to experience swelling, redness, and tenderness
at the injection site. Bruising can also occur.
You will be advised to massage the treated area (The "5-5-5 Rule" is often recommended: massage for 5 minutes, 5 times a day, for 5 days). This is MANDATORY post Sculptra treatment to reduce risk of nodules forming which are extremely difficult to resolve once formed.
